“ Leicht and Kossek Split Heritage Finance Late Model Twin 40s ”

May 8, 2021 - The Catawba Valley roared to life on Saturday with the running of Mr. Tire Night at the Races at Hickory Motor Speedway with a full slate of NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series action.

The Heritage Finance Late Models would be the first out with race one of their doubleheader 40 lap features. Kevin Leicht in the #25 would top qualifying and start from the pole position with Josh Kossek in the #44 to his outside. Gracie Trotter in the #2 and Zack Clifton in the #81 would make up row two for the start. Leicht would move to the early lead, but Kossek would quickly pressure for the point. After five laps of side by side racing with Kossek, Leicht would pull back to the lead. Clifton would pressure for second, however Kossek would hold the spot through lap 10. Lap 11 would see Clifton make the pass for second and Trotter would look to pass Kossek for third. Trotter would take the spot on lap 14 and Lavar Scott in the #34 would move around Kossek for fourth. Clifton would get loose on lap 17 and see Trotter, Scott, and Kossek all move around for positions. Lap 24 would see Scott move around Trotter for second and look to run down the leader, Leicht. The laps would wind down and Leicht's lead would prove to be too much to overcome as he would drive on to the checkered flag. Scott would finish 2nd with Trotter taking 3rd. Kossek would finish 4th and Clifton would come home 5th.  

Next up would be 50 laps in Round 4 of the Paramount Kia ‘BIG 10' Racing Challenge for the Paramount Auto Group Limited Late Models. Charlie Watson in the #9 would top time trials and start from the point with Bryson Ruff in the #24 to the outside of row one. Row two would see Mark Johnson   in the #13 and Katie Hettinger in the #71 for the green flag. Watson would take the lead on the start and bring Johnson with him to second. The #66 of Zack Wells would move around Hettinger for fourth on lap 10. Ruff would look to the inside of Johnson with the cars going door to door for several laps. Ruff would complete the pass on lap 20. The battle for third would tighten up with Wells and Hettinger reeling in Johnson. Watson would prove too tough and drive on to the win. Ruff would push hard, but have to settle for 2nd. The battle for third would go all the way to the checkered flag with Johnson sideways taking 3rd, Wells only a fender behind in 4th, and Hettinger pressing both, but finishing 5th.

Next up would see the Renegades roll off for 20 laps of door banging action. Robbie Hollifield in the #51 would top qualifying and start from the pole position with Spencer Dickinson in the #6 to his outside. Justin Austin in the #1 and David Hasson in the #83 would make up row two for the start. Hollifield would move to the early lead with Dickinson giving chase. Austin would get pressured for position by the #71 of Kyle DiVanna. DiVanna would make the pass but contact with Austin in turn one would send him spinning and into the wall on lap 8. David Hasson would make contact with DiVanna as he was stopped, ending DiVanna's night on the wrecker. The restart would see Hollifield and Dickinson bringing the field back to the green flag. Hollifield would move to the lead with Dickinson pressing for position. Dickinson would make the pass for the lead as the caution would fly for Austin's stopped car on the backstretch. The lead would revert back to the last completed lap, with Hollifield leading. Hollifield and Dickinson would bring the field back to the green flag. Hollifield would drive back to the lead. Lap 16 would see the caution fly as contact would see Hollifield spin. Austin and Brandon Hasson in the #82 would lead the field back to the flag on the restart. Austin would move to the lead with Hollifield moving to second. Austin would take the win. Hollifield would finish 2nd with Dickinson taking 3rd. Brandon Hasson would take fourth and Matthew Chambers in the #81 coming home in 5th.

The Heritage Finance Street Stocks would roar to life next for 35 laps. Cody DeMarmels in the #12 would top time trials and start from the point with Jonathon Smith in the #16 to the outside of row one. Row two would see Jesse Clark in the #5 and Ethan Johnson in the #2 for the green flag. DeMarmels would move quickly to the lead and bring Clark to second. Lap 5 would see the #31 of Derek Fowler make the pass for third. Clark would battle DeMarmels for the top spot and move to the lead on lap 11. Fowler would move around DeMarmels for second and give chase to the leader, Clark. The lead would prove insurmountable as Clark would take the win. Fowler would finish 2nd and DeMarmels would grab 3rd. Smith would take 4th, Marshall Sutton in the #64 would finish 5th, and the #7 of Zach Hale would finish 6th in his last race before heading off to Naval Officer training.

The Super Trucks would roll off next for 35 laps of exciting racing action. Charlie Watson in the #9 would top qualifying and start from the pole position with Jacob Weidman in the #77 to his outside. Allen Huffman in the #51 and Ricky Dennie in the #6 would make up row two for the start. Watson would move to the lead as Weidman would have mechanical issues and drop to fifth. Huffman would move to second with Dennie in third. Contact would send Huffman spinning in turn four on lap 4. The restart would see Watson and Weidman leading the field once again. Weidman would be challenged for position by the #70 of Travis Baity. Weidman would take the position as Baity would spin on the backstretch on lap 6, bringing out the caution. Watson and Weidman would bring the field back to the green flag. Watson would move to the lead as Dennie would move to second. Contact between Weidman and Dennie would send Dennie spinning and the caution flying on lap 8. Watson and Huffman would bring the field back to the green flag. Watson would drive back to the lead with Huffman running second. Weidman would move around Huffman for second on lap 22. Watson would prove too strong on the night and drive on to the win. Weidman would finish 2nd with Huffman taking 3rd. Dennie would grab 4th and Baity would take home 5th.  

The Heritage Finance Late Models would close out the evening's action with race two of their doubleheader. After a 6 car invert from the finishing order of race one Regina Sirvent in the #10 and Zack Clifton in the #81 would make up row one. Row two would see Josh Kossek in the #44 and Gracie Trotter in the #2 side by side for the start. Kossek would move to the lead with Lavar Scott in the #34 jumping to second. Trotter would drive to third and give challenge to Scott for second. After several attempts, lap 18 would see Trotter make the pass for second. Clifton would move around Scott to third. Lap 37 would see Clifton move around Trotter for second. Clifton would make a run, but fall a few feet short as Kossek would take the win. Clifton would finish 2nd and Trotter would grab 3rd. Leicht would take 4th and Sirvent would finish 5th.

Next weekend the always popular Tour of Destruction rolls into town for a two night affair on Friday and Saturday. Tickets remain for Friday night, however Saturday night is sold out. There will be a PayPerView presented by CommScope both nights on HickoryMotorSpeedway.tv.

The NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series returns to action with a full slate of action in two weeks on May 22nd.
