"Millington and Kossek split Twin 40s In Season Opener”

March 8th, 2021 - The sound of horsepower echoed throughout the Catawba Valley on Saturday night as racing returned to Hickory Motor Speedway for the 2021 Season Opener Blowout for the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series!

The Heritage Finance Late Models would be the first to hit the track for the first of their two 40 lap features. Ryan Millington in the #15 would set fast time and start from the point with Landon Huffman in the #11 starting outside of row one. Row two would see Gracie Trotter in the #2 and Jack Wood in the #21 side by side for the start. Millington would look to take the early lead as he dove into turn one. But Huffman would use the high line to build momentum and take the lead on lap one. Huffman would lead the first ten laps with Millington in second and Trotter running a close third. 2020 Paramount Auto Group Limited Late Model champion Josh Kossek in the #44 would move up to fourth at the halfway point in his Heritage Finance Late Model debut. Lap 23 would see Millington pressure Huffman for the top spot. The caution would fly on lap 24 when the #4 of Joseph Parker Jr would spin in turn four. Huffman and Millington would bring the field back to the green flag. The lead duo would spend the last 16 laps glued together in another epic Hickory Motor Speedway battle for the win. As Huffman and Millington would duel Trotter would sneak back into the picture for the win. The leaders would tangle over the last lap and Millington would take the win. Huffman would finish 2nd with Trotter coming home in 3rd. Contact between Millington, Huffman, and Trotter would see Huffman stopped in the tire barrier at the crossover gate, however all would be able to continue in race two. Jack Wood in the #21 would finish 4th and Kossek would take 5th.

Next up would see the Street Stocks hit the track for 30 laps of racing action. Jesse Clark in the #5 would take the pole position with Mark Whitten in the #12 to his outside. Kevin Eby in the #03 and Ethan Johnson in the #2 would start from row two. Clark would have mechanical issues and would not start his familiar #5 leaving the front row of Eby and Whitten. The pair would swap the lead for the first four laps until Eby would move to the lead on lap 5. Lap 6 would see the caution fly as contact between Marshall Sutton in the #64 and Whitten would send Sutton sliding across the track. Sutton would have to park due to a broken tie rod. The green flag would see Eby and Whitten side by side. Eby would move back to the lead with Whitten close in tow. Johnson would join the battle for the top spot at the halfway point. Whitten would try to make his way to the top spot but would fall just short. Eby would hang on and drive to the win. Whitten would grab 2nd while Johnson would take 3rd. Trey Buff in the #6 would finish 4th and Zach Hale in the #7 would take 5th.

The Paramount Auto Group Limited Late Models would line up next for 50 laps in Round 1 of the Paramount Kia “BIG 10” Racing Challenge. Bryson Ruff in the #24 would set fast time and start from the point with Chase Janes in the #47 to his outside. Row two would see Josh Stark in the #32 Katie Hettinger in the #71 side by side for the green flag. Ruff would pull to the early lead followed by Janes and Stark. The #22 of Max Price would move to 4th with Hettinger running 5th. The caution would fly on lap 10 with a spin involving the #97 of Billy Jack Lester. The restart would see Ruff move quickly back to the lead with Janes in tow. The #83 of Chris Honeycutt would move into the top five on lap 15. The Leicht Motorsports drivers of Stark and Price would have a spirited battle for the third spot. Hettinger would look to move back into the top five as she would put constant pressure on Honeycutt. Hettinger would complete the pass on lap 32. Lap 34 would see Price make the pass on Stark for third. Hettinger would make the move around Stark for fourth on lap 38. Ruff would prove too tough on the night as he would drive on to the win. Janes would take 2nd with Price grabbing 3rd. 13 year old Hettinger would grab 4th and Zack Clifton in the #81 would finish 5th.

Rolling off next would be the Renegades for 20 laps of door to door racing excitement. Robbie Hollifield in the #51 would start from the top spot with Kyle DiVanna in the #71 to his outside. DiVanna would get the better jump on the start and move to the top spot with David Hasson in the #83 close behind. The caution would fly on lap 6 as the #69 would spin in turn two. The restart would see DiVanna and David Hasson pace the field to the green flag. DiVanna would move back to the lead with David Hasson close in tow. The caution would fly on lap 8 as the #6 of Spencer Dickinson would roll to a stop in turn four. DiVanna and David Hasson would bring the field back to green flag. DiVanna would move back to the lead. Hollifield would come roaring through the field to resume the lead on lap 10. Lap 14 would see the caution fly as David Hasson would spin in turn four. Hollifield and DiVanna would lead the field to the green flag. Hollifield would pull back to the lead with DiVanna putting pressure close behind. Hollifield would hold on for the win. DiVanna would finish 2nd with Kyle Boice in the #73 finishing 3rd. Dickinson would finish 4th and David Hasson grabbing 5th.

The Heritage Finance Late Models would pound the pavement next for the second of their twin 40 lap features. After the invert from race one, Joseph Parker Jr in the #4 would start from the top spot with Josh Kossek in the #44 to their outside. Row two would be made up of Jack Wood in the #21 and Gracie Trotter in the #2. Kossek would pull to the early lead with Trotter close behind. The #11 of Landon Huffman and the #15 of Ryan Millington would pull to Trotter's bumper as they would challenge for the position. Both Huffman and Millington would move around Trotter on lap 12. Kossek would pace the field for the first twenty laps, but Huffman and Millington would narrow the lead and move to his rear bumper. As the pair would close in, Kossek would turn up the pace to remain in the lead. Kossek would go on to take the win in only his second Heritage Finance Late Model race. Huffman and Millington would have a side by side battle for second with Huffman taking 2nd and Millington grabbing 3rd. Trotter would finish 4th and Wood took home 5th.

Finishing out the night's action would be the 4-Cylinders. Cody Combs in the #9 would start from the pole position with Robert Trivette in the #11 to his outside. Combs would take the early lead with Trivette close behind. Trivette would have engine problems at the halfway point and pull to the pits. Combs would drive on to the win with Trivette finishing 2nd.
