Gray scores USCS “Asphalt Thunder” Finale win at Hickory

Newton, NC - October 23, 2010 – Defending Champion, Terry Gray from Bartlett, Tennessee captured the win in the United Sprint Car Series Asphalt Thunder Tour division USCS “Hickory Night of Thunder” at Hickory Motor Speedway on Saturday night. Gray was moved forward into the K&N Filters Pole Position on the restart of the race after Tom Paterson from Argos, Indiana stopped while entering turn three on lap one on the initial start. Gray then led the entire 40-lap distance and left the balance of the field to battle for the runner-up spot. Gray won the battle but lost the war as Johnny Bridges who finished in second place and garnered enough points on the evening to secure the USCS Asphalt Thunder Tour mini-series 2010 title.

Gray led all forty laps to victory lane in his Rislone Engine Treatment, Wesmar powered J&J Auto Racing sprint car #10 . The race was only halted once for a caution involving rookie Holly Jackson from Timmonsville, North Carolina on lap ten before resuming a torrid pace for the final 30-laps that left the top four cars on the lead lap at the conclusion. The races KSE Hard Charger Johnny Bridges finished in the runner-up spot after starting sixth. USCS Rookie point's leader Morgan Turpen, who had second fast time started in fifth position in the main event and the seventeen year old female sprint car star followed Bridges in third place. Adam “Union” Jackson, a transplant from Birmingham, England who now resides in Timmonsville, South Carolina finished fourth. Another one of the nation's top female sprint car racers Sondi Eden from Crawfordsville, Indiana, rounded out the top five finishers. 

Johnny Bridges set the fastest qualifying lap of the evening by turning a lap of 12.561 seconds around the famed 0.363 mile paved oval in his J&J Auto Racing #07. He then watched as Engler Machine and Tool First Heat Race winner, Adam Jackson from Birmingham, England drew a six inversion in the K&N Filters Pole Award drawing placing Tom Paterson on the pole.

Nick Bashford headed the next group of finishers in sixth place in his Roush-Yates Ford powered mount. It was only Bashford's  second time on the pavement. Tom Paterson rallied from last place in the re-start order to garner the seventh position. Brian Carter fom Concord, North Carolina finished in the eighth position. 008 USCS Southern Thunder Rookie of the Year, Jake McLain from Indian trail, North Carolina finished ninth and Tim Perry from Carolina rounded out the top ten finishers.

Johnny Bridges won the 6 cars, 6-laps Parts USCS Speed Dash. Adam Jackson garnered the win in the 10-lap Engler Machine and Tool First Heat. won the Butlerbuilt Second Heat Race. Veteran sprint car racer Tom Paterson  received the K&N Filters Pole award.  The JE Pistons Top Guns Award, which rotates from first through fifth positions in the A-Main, went to second place Johnny Bridges.

Morgan Turpen was awarded the Young Gun of the Race (for the highest finishing driver under 25 years old.) after her third place finish in the main event.  She also was the USCS Rookie of the Race. Johnny Bridges also garnered the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award for advancing the most positions in the 40-lap main event (five). Joe Larkin from Suwannee, Georgia also passed four cars.

The final two events of the 2010 season for the United Sprint Car Series presented by Goodyear are the Gumbo Nationals at Greenville Speedway in Greenville, Mississippi on November 5h and 6 th and the season finale USCS Fall Nationals “Flip Flop 50” on November 12 th -13 th at historic Riverside international Speedway in West Memphis, Arkansas.
