" Ryan Repko and Chris Hudspeth split Twin 40s "

Sam's Club Night

August 25th , 2018

The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series returned to action on Saturday night at America’s Most Famous Short Track with the running of Sam’s Club Night at the Races.

Leading off the night’s action would be the Paramount Auto Group Limited Late Models and the first of their two 25 lap features. Vince Midas in the #14 would set a torrid pace in qualifying with a lap of 15.37 seconds to take the pole position. Gage Painter in the #12P would be close behind and grab the second starting position. Taylor Gray in the #15 and Pat Rachels in the #34 would make up row number two. Midas and Painter would have a fierce side by side battle for the lead several laps in until Midas would eventually nose ahead. Painter would suffer mechanical issues and come to pit road during a caution on lap 8 and eventually retire from the first of the two features. The crew of Painter would work tirelessly to hopefully get him back out for race number two. The restart would see points leader Rachels to the outside of Midas and pressuring for the lead. Midas would use the inside line to his advantage and once again take the top spot with Rachels falling back into the clutches of Mason Ludwig in the #12L. While the battle would rage for second and beyond Midas would take the opportunity to stretch his lead and keep a safe distance from the scramble behind him. Midas would prove too strong on the night and take the checkered flag. Brody Pope in the #1 would work his way through the field to finish 2nd with Ludwig finishing 3rd. Chris Honeycutt in the #83 and Josh Kossek in the #44 would round out the top 5 in 4th and 5th.

Next up would see the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Models hit the track for race number one of their two 40 lap features. Ryan Repko in the #14 would set a blistering lap of 14.856 seconds in qualifying to grab the pole position. 2015 NWAAS Hickory Motor Speedway track champion Matt Piercy in the #25 would have a weekend off from his Hendrick Motorsports duties and put his hot rod on the outside pole after deciding to go racing at his home track. Justin Carroll in the #57 and Monty Cox in the #21 would make up row two for the start. Repko would take the early lead as Piercy would be pressured by Carroll for second. The battles would rage throughout the field as everyone would give chase to the speedy youngster in the #14 who stated he was on a mission to check a Hickory win off his list of accomplishments after doing the same recently at South Boston Speedway. With the race running all green flag Repko would stretch the lead and look to get that victory. As the Checkered Flag would fly on lap forty Repko would grab his first Hickory Motor Speedway victory. Carroll would hold on for second with Mitch Walker in the #29 finishing 3rd. Annabeth Barnes-Crum in the #12 would work her way from the back of the field to finish 4th with Cox grabbing a top five with 5th.

The Cosmo Motors Street Stocks would roar to life next for their 30 lap feature. Jonathan Smith in the #16 would take the top spot with a lap of 16.456 seconds while Troy DeMarmels would be scheduled to start 2nd with a lap only 16 thousandths of a second slower than the pole sitter but mechanical issues would force repairs and push his starting position to the rear of the field. Smith would jump to the early lead with everyone scrambling to give chase. The #21 of Drew Cox would make a bold move through the field in the opening laps after a near incident in qualifying relegated him to start toward the rear of the field. A caution would bunch the field and see Smith and Cox battle side by side several laps for the lead. Smith would eventually move to the point and drive to the lead. The battle would be from second on back with the field fiercely contesting each position. Smith would drive on to grab the win with DeMarmels moving up to 2nd. Marshall Sutton in the #64 would finish 3rd, Kevin Eby in the #03 would take 4th and Jesse Clark in the #5 would finish 5th.

The Renegades would be the next to pound the historic pavement for 20 action packed laps. Kenneth Roberts in the #8 would grab the pole position with the #1 of Justin Austin starting to his outside. Roberts would drive to the early lead with the field in tow. Battles would rage throughout the field with the only spot not in doubt being the leader. Roberts would drive on to take the win in dominating fashion. Second place would be decided by a slugfest on the final lap down the backstretch and culminating with a accident in turns three and four as the checkered flag would fly. Austin would make it back to the line to finish 2nd and Brian Larkin in the #7 in 3rd. Robbie Hollifield in the #51 would finish 4th with Danny Crump Jr. finishing 5th.

Next up would see the Carolina Custom Golf Cart 4-Cylinders get wound up for 25 laps. Dennis Ward in the #25 would be fastest in qualifying and take the top spot with the #6 of Brian Mundy starting to his outside. Ward would pull to the pits with mechanical issues as the pace laps counted down. The Dixie Motors crew would work furiously and get Ward back onto the track, but he would have to start from the rear after the unscheduled stop. Mundy would take the early lead as Dennis Trivette in the #28 would fall in close behind. The caution would fly on lap 17 when Trivette would have mechanical problems and have to retire to pit road. Ward had worked his way through the field and would restart to the outside of the leader, Mundy. As the green flag would fly the leaders would make contact on the front stretch but continue on. A spin by Robert Trivette in the #11 would bring out the caution setting up another restart with 8 laps to go. As the green flag flew Mundy and Ward would battle side by side for the next several laps. Mundy would eventually nose ahead and reclaim the spot he had occupied the entire race. Ward would give chase but come up short as Mundy would grab the win and drive on to victory lane. Cody Combs in the #9 would get by Ward in the closing laps for 2nd while Ward would settle for 3rd. Allison Houston in the #29 moved up to a solid 4th place finish, with Nathaniel Kanupp in the #17 finishing 5th.

The Paramount Auto Group Limited Late Models would hit the track next for the second of their twin 25 lap features. The top two qualifiers in race one would be the same top two qualifiers in race two but they would swap starting spots from race one. Gage Painter in the #12P would take the top spot with a fast lap of 15.331 seconds, but would have to start at the rear as a result of falling out of race number one earlier in the night. Vince Midas in the #14 would roll off second. Taylor Gray in the #15 and Brody Pope in the #1 would make up row two for the start. The initial start would see Midas to the lead with Gray close behind. As the field would come off of turn 4 to complete the first lap a caution involving several cars including the #83 of Chris Honeycutt and the #34 of Hickory Motor Speedway points leader Pat Rachels would
slow the field and necessitate a full restart. When the field would finally go back to green Midas would once again move to the point as Gray would give chase. Painter would methodically work his way through the field, making the pass for 2nd place with 10 laps to go and giving chase to the leader. Midas’ lead would prove too much however as the 17 year old would drive on to the win, doubling up on the night. Painter would make a remarkable rebound and finish 2nd with Gray finishing 3rd. Rachels would also bounce back nicely from the early incident and finish 4th with Mason Ludwig in the #12L finishing 5th.

Closing out the night would see the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Models running race two of their Twin 40 lap features. The invert from the finishing order of race one would see the #51 of Jeremy Pelfrey starting from the pole with Chris Hudspeth in the #28 to the outside. Jacob Heafner in the #95 and Monty Cox in the #21 would make up row two for the start. Pelfrey would take the early lead with Hudspeth following close in his tire tracks. Hudspeth would make his move on Pelfrey and drive to the top spot. The front pair would stay that way as the battle would rage behind them to see who would give chase to the leaders. As the laps clicked away Matt Piercy in the #25 after suffering a flat tire in the first event, would work his way from the back of the field and move to the 3rd position, and begin reeling in the leaders. Hudspeth’s lead would prove too much as he would drive on to the victory, his second on the year at Hickory Motor Speedway. Pelfrey would hang on for 2nd with Piercy finishing 3rd. Hickory Motor Speedway points leader, Heafner, would finish 4th and Annabeth Barnes-Crum would finish 5th.

Next week will see a great annual tradition with a strong field honoring a local legend return with the running of the Paramount Auto Group Bobby Isaac Memorial 150 presented by Black’s Tire. 150 laps for the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Models, 50 laps and Round 9 for the Paramount Auto Group Limited Late Models, 35 laps for the One Design Super Trucks, 30 laps for the Cosmo Motors Street Stocks, and 25 laps for the Hickory Vintage Racers.
