Berry Enjoys Back-to-Back Late Model Victories

(Newton, NC - - May 3, 2014) It was another beautiful night for short track racing at America's Most Famous Short Track Saturday night, when the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series drivers took to the track for an excitement filled event of short-track racing. Josh Berry (No. 88) picked up his second Bojangles' Late Model victory in a row, as Dexter Canipe Jr. (No. 5) claimed the win in the Gold King Limited Late Model event, while Kevin Townsend (No. 10) went to Victory Lane in the Street Stock race. Other feature winners included Spencer Boyd (No. 09) in the Super Trucks and Bob Park (No. 74) in the Bench-Built Sportsmen Racing Classics.

Shane Lee (No. 00) started the 50-lap main event for the Bojangles' Late Models from the pole position, but received pressure from the No. 75 of Landon Huffman during the early laps and relinquished the top spot within the first five laps. L. Huffman would then be overtaken by the No.7 of Ashley Huffman. Multiple lead changes took place throughout the first half of the race, until the No. 88 of Josh Berry settled into the top spot on lap 22, leaving the remainder of the field to battle for position. As the race progressed, the No. 9 of William Byron moved into the second position and the No. 12 of Austin McDaniel worked his way from the back of the pack into the top five. Berry survived multiple caution periods on his way to Victory Lane, leaving Byron, McDaniel, the No. 7 of Ashley Huffman and the No. 8 of Chandler LeVan to finish second through fifth, respectively.

Seasoned Hickory Motor Speedway driver, Dexter Canipe Jr. (No. 5), earned the pole position for the Gold King Limited Late Model race and went on to lead all 35 laps of the event, leaving the rest of the competition to battle for position behind him. The No. 51 of Jeremy Pelfrey stayed close to the back of Canipe Jr. in the second position for the race, leaving an exciting battle for third. The no. 50 of Ross Dalton had taken over the position on lap five, but slowly slipped back in the field as the No. 1 of Trent Barnes settled into third with just over 15 laps to go. The No. 1 of Taylor Stricklin and the No. 18 of Casey Pierce followed behind Barnes with less than 10 laps remaining and settled into position where they would all finish the race.

The No. 10 of Kevin Townsend brought the Street Stock field to the green flag for the start of the 30-lap race and went on to pace the field for the caution-free event. The No. 64 of Marshall Sutton would challenge Townsend for the position during the first few laps, but Townsend pulled away as the competition would string out single file. Sutton, the No. 03 of Kevin Eby, No 16 of Jonathon Smith and the No. 2 of Larry Mosher made up the top five

The No. 15 of Landon Huffman brought the Super Truck field to the green flag for their 35-lap event and remained out front until lap 11 when the No. 09 of Spencer Boyd moved out front. Huffman settled into second, and began to receive pressure from the No. 9 of Lee Queen, who took over the position before the first caution of the night waved on lap 20 when the No. 7 of Whitney Lail came to a stop in turn four. Boyd went on to pick up the checkered flag and was followed to the line by Queen, the No. 77 of Tal Davidson, Huffman and the No. 91 of Keith Norville.

Don Fenn (No.2) paced the field for the first 24 laps of the Bench-Built Sportsmen Racing Classics 25-lap feature before going for a spin in turn two on the final lap. The No. 74 of Bob Park worked his way into the second position prior to lap 20, after starting fourth, and began to pressure Fenn for the lead. The two made contact heading out of turn one on the final lap, which resulted in a spin for Fenn and Park to Vicotry Lane. The No. 8 of Robert Hapeman, No. 98 of Todd Bradburry, No. 48 of Larry Benz and the No. 16 of Bill Webb rounded out the top five.

The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series returns next Saturday, May 10 for 84 Lumber Night at the Races featuring round four of the Paramount KIA "Big-10 Racing Challenge".
