McDaniel Picks Up First Win of 2014 Season

in Round Four the Paramount KIA "Big-10" Racing Challenge

 

(Newton, NC - - May 14, 2014) Fans and competitors gathered for an action packed night of short-track racing Saturday night and witness Hickory Motor Speedway track champion, Austin McDaniel (No. 12) pick up his first Bojangles' Late Model victory of the 2014 season in the fourth round of the Paramount KIA "Big-10" Racing Challenge. Mark Johnson (No. 13 Gold King Limited Late Model), Kevin Eby (No. 03 Street Stock), Matt Elledge (No. 99 4-Cylinders) and Carroll McKinney (No. 16 WrenchRags Renegades) also earned the chance to celebrate the sweet tastes of victory during 84 Lumber Night at the Races.

Previous Paramount KIA Big-10 Race Challenge winner, Josh Berry (No. 88) earned the pole position for the fourth round of the challenge event Saturday night and brought the field to the green flag. Following a lengthy caution period for a multi-car pileup on lap 4, Berry remained in the lead with the No. 12 of Austin McDaniel restarting second. McDaniel battled for the lead at the restart and settled into the top position on lap six, remaining there until the checkered flag waved. The No. 7 of Ashley Huffman, No. 44 of Dillon Bassett closed in to challenge for the lead but at the line it was McDaniel, A. Huffman, Bassett and the No. 7 of Justin Crider and Berry completed the top five.

Mark Johnson (No. 13) led the Gold King Limited Late Model division to the green flag for a 35-lap event and raced side-by-side with the No. 51 of Jeremy Pelfrey until the second lap when Pelfrey took over the top spot. Following a lap three caution, Pelfrey and Johnson resumed their battle for the top spot with Johnson pulling out front. As the laps ticked away the No. 7 of Taylor Stricklin tried get into the mix for the lead, but it was Johnson who would claim the victory leaving Stricklin, Pelfrey, the No. 1 of Trent Barnes and the No. 12 of Evan Duggins to finish second through fifth.

Kevin Eby (No. 03) earned the pole position for the Street Stock race and went on to lead all 30 laps of the event on his way to Victory Lane. The field was slowed on lap five for the stalled car of the (No. 21) of Kevin Saam on the backstretch, lining up the field for a restart. Eby continued a strong contender and remained out front leaving the No. 10 of Kevin Townsend, the No. 31 of Michael Edwards, No. 33 of Mart Whitten and No. 16 of Jonathan Smith to follow behind and complete the top five of the finishing order.

The 4-Cylinders hit the track for a 25-lap race, with the No. 99 of Matt Elledge leading the way. Within the first five laps the top three qualifiers, Elledge, the No. 00 of Eddie Gilbert and No. 98 of Larry Pollard, had created a comfortable lead over the field. The eight-car field kept the action clean leaving Elledge to pick up the win in the caution free event. Pollard, Gilbert, the No. 28 of Dennis Trivette and No. 98 of Rob Lewis finished second through fifth respectively.

The WrenchRags Renegades brought another great night of racing to an end. The No. 6 of Darren Dickerson took the green flag from the pole position but relinquished the top stop to the No. 16 of Carroll McKinney. McKinney went on to win the 20-lap event, leaving Dickerson the No. 8 of Kenneth Roberts, No. 77 of Shawn Hayes and the No. 15 of Stephen Shore to complete the top five.

The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series will take off Saturday May 17th, but will return to action Saturday, May 24 for Woodforest Bank Night at the Races presented by the Hickory Record featuring round five of the Paramount KIA "Big-10" Racing Challenge. The night will feature a 100-lap show for the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Bojangles' Late Models, and appearances by the Gold King Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, Super Trucks and the WrenchRags Renegades. Grandstands will open at 5 p.m. ET, with qualifying immediately following. An On-Track Autograph Session will begin at 6 p.m. with feature racing action beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are only $11 for adults, $9 for seniors and teens with kids 12 and under FREE.
