Rhodes Wins Zloop Night At The Races Presented by Red Roof Inn

August 10th, 2013

By: Julie Buckner

Red Roof Inn Night at the Races would feature the ZLOOP Racing Challenge Round #9 and be greeted again by rain just before qualifying would begin. After an extended shower would force qualifying to be canceled, the track would be dried and all divisions would be required to start by points.

The first division or the night would be the WrenchRags Renegades. Points Leader #16 of Carroll McKinney and the #4 of Greg Austin would start on the front row. At the green flag McKinney and Austin would make contact, sending Austin to the pits to repair some front end damage. However, Austin would be able to continue. On the restart the #71 of Kyle DiVanna would slow, allowing Austin to begin working his way through the field. Lap twelve would bring out the second caution of the night for debris on the track in turn four. The #77 of Shawn Hayes would take the lead on the restart. Hayes would maintain the front spot and take the checkered flag and his first victory in the WrenchRags Renegade division. Hayes would be followed by McKinney, DiVanna,, the #09 of Blake Walker and Austin.

The second event of the night would be the Paramount KIA Limited Late Models with the points leader of the #00 of Shane Lee starting on the point followed by the #75 of Landon Huffman. Lee would take the early lead in the 35-lap feature, while a great battle between the #51 of Jeremy Pelfrey, the #21 of Monty Cox and the #18 of Casey Pierce would be in hot pursuit of Lee and L. Huffman. Pelfrey, Cox and Pierce would race side by side for several laps, with Cox finally taking the position. At the checkered flag it would be Lee, L. Huffman, Cox, Pierce and Pelfrey rounding out the Top five.

The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Bojangles Late Models points leader #12 of Austin McDaniel would start in the top spot followed by the #00 of Shane Lee for the Red Roof Night at the Races featuring The ZLOOP Racing Challenge Round 9. McDaniel would take the early lead and set a steady pace for the 100 lap feature event. The #22 of Dan Moore, the #77 of Jeremy Sorel, the #57 of Justin Carroll and the #41 of Ben Rhodes would be in a battle for position. On lap nine Moore and Sorel would make contact sending Moore into the turn one safety barrier. Unfortunately it would end Moores night. The race would be red flagged while the safety barrier would be put back in place. On the restart the #25 of Matt Piercy and the #43 of Jesse LeFevers would be door to door battling for 3rd until LeFevers would finally take that spot. On lap thirty-one the #67 of Jacob Harrell would spin on the front stretch to bring out the second caution. Under caution the car of Rhodes would be forced to pit with an oil leak and return to the field. The caution flag would wave again on lap forty and forty-eight for spins. The #7 of Justin Crider would be forced to retire early on lap 56. The #57 of Grant Wimbish and the #15 of Brayton Haws were racing hard until making contact. Both would make great recoveries, however lost track position. Lap seventy-three, would unfortunately bring Wimbishs night to an end with handling issues. On lap seventy-seven Rhodes would make his final pass of the night and take the lead from McDaniel. The final caution would wave on lap eighty-six when the #11 of Dillon Houser and the #7 of John Kidwell make contact coming out of turn four and ending their night. On the restart, the front cars would slow on the start causing contact behind them and mixing up the field. On lap ninety-seven, LeFevers car would over heat and bring him down pit road. Rhodes would take the victory, followed by McDaniel, Sorel, Lee and the #97 of Keith Bumgarner.

The Street Stock division would close out the night with the #03 of Kevin Eby and the #64 of Marshall Sutton leading the field to the green flag. Sutton would take the lead early from Eby, however his night would end with mechanical issues on lap nine. On the same lap the #33 of Mark Whitten would come to a stop coming out of turn two with suspension problems. After a caution for the fluid dropped by Sutton's car the race would resume. By lap sixteen the #22 of Ben Ebeling would take over the top spot with the #17 of Baron Kuritzky moving into second and the #5 of Donnie Harmon picking up third. The #2 of Larry Mosher, the #18 of Troy DeMarmels and the #03 of Kevin Eby would battle for fourth-sixth positions. At the flag it would be Ebeling, Kuritzky, Harmon, Mosher and DeMarmels.
